About Johnna
Mindful Behaviors  . . . with Johnna Pilipchuk, MA, LPA
Psychology has always been a love of mine, but I didn't make it a career until I'd spent
several years as a computer engineer. (Weird, huh?) As an undergraduate I took Psychology
classes for fun while getting a BS in Mathematics and Computer Science. It took me a few
years to figure out that communicating with computers was a rather one-sided interaction and
I decided to go back to school to get an MA in Psychology. I was licensed by the North
Carolina Psychology Board in 1995 and have loved every minute of my new career.

Most of my training is cognitive-behavioral which means that I assist clients who want to
understand and change behaviors by helping them:
  • identify ineffective behaviors
  • learn new behaviors
  • understand how their beliefs or thoughts about themselves may interfere in the
    process

My cognitive-behavioral training serves me well as a Dialectical Behavior Therapist as well.
A large portion of my practice is DBT and I particularly like providing DBT to adolescents. I
teach a weekly DBT Skills Class for Adolescents and their parents in Chapel Hill with
another local DBT therapist. I've attended workshops with Dr. Marsha Linehan, the creator
of DBT and I've attended workshops with Dr. Jill Rathus and Dr. Alec Miller, the
researchers in DBT for adolescents.

I also have extensive training in working with Dissociative Disorders and enjoy working with
individuals who dissociate or experience Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple
personalities.)
